Gurudwara Bangla Sahib 


Gurudwara Bangla Sahib is located in the Cannaught Place area in New Delhi on the east side intersection of Ashok Road and Baba Kharag Singh Marg. This is one of the most prominent Sikh Gurdwara in New Delhi and is visited by thousands of Sikhs daily along with a large number of people of other faiths.

This famous shrine in India is associated to the eighth guru of Sikhs, Guru Harkrishan, who was born on 7th July 1656 AD at Kiratpur, Punjab. This Sikh house of worship has a pond inside the gurdwara complex, which is known as the Sarovar whose water is considered holy by Sikhs. The Gurudwara Bangla Sahib was built by Sikh General, Sardar Bhagel Singh in 1783.


From where and how it takes name Gurudwara Bangla Sahib

It is said that the eighth Sikh Guru, Guru Har Krishan stayed at this Gurdwara during his stay in Delhi in 1664. This place was originally a bungalow of Raja Jai Singh, an Indian ruler in the seventeenth century. Later, this fabulous mansion was converted into a Gurdwara in the memory of the Guru Sahib and was called as Gurdwara Bangla Sahib.



Gurdwara Bangla Sahib can be located from a distant by its stunning golden dome and tall flagpole. This Gurdwara is also a place for special congregation during birth anniversary of Guru Har Krishan and death anniversary of Maharaja Ranjit Singh.

The Gurdwara complex holds several other things like a kitchen, a higher secondary school, a library, a hospital and and a museum and art gallery. The Art Gallery located in the basement of the Gurdwara is also very popular with visitors as it showcases paintings depicting historical events connected with Sikh history.



Like in other Sikh Gurdwaras, the concept of langar is practiced here, and all people, regardless of race or religion may eat in the langar hall or the Gurdwara kitchen. The food is generally prepared by people who work there or volunteers. It is expected that the visitors at the Gurdwara cover their hair and do not wear shoes inside. Moreover, one should wear conservative clothes, covering legs and shoulders. For this purpose, free of charge head scarves and a shoe-minding service is available inside the compound.
Devotional music is relayed throughout the complex continuously.
